Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals in Berkeley, California

The 43-acre campus in Berkeley is the nerve center of the company's global biotechnology manufacturing operations which ensures the supply of millions of units of protein therapeutics each day. More than 1,500 people work on the Berkeley campus which is also a major biomanufacturing site, with its primary capacity devoted to producing a leading recombinant FVIII therapy, Kogenate® FS* [Antihemophilic Factor (Recombinant)], for the treatment of people living with hemophilia A. The global biotechnology product supply organization is also headquartered in Berkeley.

100 years of proud heritage

Bayer’s rich history in Berkeley, California extends back more than 100 years. In 1903, a small family business known as Cutter Analytical Laboratory moved to a 3-acre lot in the city’s west side.

Working with the government in the 1940s, Cutter began separating and drying plasma from human blood. Plasma is the protein-rich nutritional fluid that supports red cells in whole blood. During World War II, plasma was used as a temporary remedy for severe trauma on the battlefield, and Cutter became one of the country’s major plasma producers. Over the following two decades, the medical uses for human plasma protein products evolved, and the products were used to treat several blood-related illnesses. As a result, plasma fractionation flourished at Cutter.

In 1974, German chemicals company Bayer AG acquired Cutter, and the Berkeley site began to focus on the emerging field of biotechnology. The team achieved an important breakthrough in the treatment of hemophilia A in 1993, when the team developed the Kogenate®* product line.

Because of the campus’s robust capabilities and years of development expertise, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals formally named the Berkeley site as one of only three major research and development sites in the organization.
