Joerg Heidrich, Senior Vice President, Product Supply Biotech, Berkeley Site Head
A recognized leader in the field of biomanufacturing and a Bayer veteran, Mr. Heidrich has dedicated more than 20 years of his professional career to the management of various manufacturing operations within the global Bayer Group. He currently heads the Global Biotechnology Product Supply organization overseeing the manufacturing and distribution of Bayer’s $3 billion-plus biotechnology product portfolio.
His career at Bayer began as a project leader back in 1986. Mr. Heidrich’s leadership and knowledge in the areas of engineering and product development brought him to manufacturing sites in Germany, Switzerland, and Mexico, where he supervised pharmaceutical production and administration of Bayer de México. In 2001, Mr. Heidrich moved to Berkeley, California and served as the Head of Production for Bayer HealthCare until 2005, when he assumed the role as Vice President of Product Supply for Kogenate®.
Glenn Pierce, Ph.D. M.D., Applied Research, Head of US Medical Affairs, Hematology
When he joined Bayer in 2005, Dr. Pierce brought more than 30 years experience in the bleeding disorders community to the company. Today, his focus remains on strengthening Bayer’s pipeline of next-generation clotting factors to more effectively treat hemophilia and coagulation disorders.
His career in the biotechnology industry began on the West Coast, where he established the Experimental Pathology department at Amgen and took multiple growth factors through preclinical, and in some cases, into clinical development for tissue regeneration. Dr. Pierce also co-founded a gene therapy company to develop a therapeutic which entered clinical development for tissue injury.
Dr. Pierce received his medical training from Case Western Reserve University and Washington University in the fields of immunology, internal medicine, pathology, and growth factors/oncogenes. Also to note, Dr. Pierce once served the hemophilia community as the chief volunteer officer for the National Hemophilia Foundation.
Olivia Krampe, Ph.D., Vice President, Site head, Supply Center Emeryville
A strong leader recognized for her team building abilities, Olivia Krampe is responsible for all of the site operations at Supply Center Emeryville, a site which was acquired by Bayer in 2007. As the site's key leader, Ms. Krampe oversees all functions, including manufacturing, quality assurance and engineering at the Emeryville site. Prior to arriving in the Bay Area, Ms. Krampe was a part of the Schering organization for more than 15 years, overseeing the manufacturing of some of the company's top products before Schering was acquired by Bayer. In addition, she has more than 10 years experience in leading manufacturing organizations covering API and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Ms. Krampe earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry at Technical University Aachen, Germany, graduating summa cum laude.
Terry Hermiston, Ph.D., Director of Novel Technologies, Richmond Administrative Site Head
Dr. Hermiston leads the team responsible for establishing and identifying novel technology platforms to support biological development in Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceutical’s world-wide pharmaceutical research organization. In addition, he oversees the operation of Bayer’s west coast research center.
With a biotechnology career spanning nearly two decades, Dr. Hermiston has published nearly 40 research papers, holds four patents and has additional patents pending. Prior to joining Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Hermiston was the principal scientist and scientific director for the global department of gene therapy research and gene technologies for Berlex Biosciences and its Germany-based parent company. Dr. Hermiston also served in roles of increasing responsibility with Onyx Pharmaceuticals and completed a National Institutes of Health (NIH) fellowship in microbiology and immunology at St. Louis University School of Medicine.
David Carlson, Sr. Director, Site Head, Supply Center Seattle
Mr. Carlson is responsible for the manufacture of Leukine (sargramostim) and all site operations at Supply Center Seattle, a site which was acquired by Bayer in 2006.
He brings more than 20 years of biomanufacturing experience to Bayer HealthCare. Prior to joining Bayer HealthCare, Mr. Carlson served in roles of increasing responsibility for Berlex Laboratories and its Germany-based parent company. His career started and expanded in scope at Immunex Corporation where he ultimately oversaw clinical and commercial biologics manufacturing and associated production functions (Warehouse, Facilities, Engineering, EH&S) for three company-owned and operated U.S. facilities, for both mammalian and microbial expression systems.
