    Amit Desai

Amit Desai knew he wanted to enter the biotechnology industry when, at the age of 16, he read about DNA transcription and was amazed by the mechanisms in our bodies. From there, after his studies in chemical engineering were completed, Amit joined Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals and now works as a Process Control Engineer.

"Ultimately, my job is to design and implement a system which keeps our current manufacturing processes under 'control.' It ensures that the products we produce are safe and of the highest quality for our patients."

Amit credits numerous mentors and Bayer's emphasis on communication and diversity training for his successful career at the Berkeley-site. He hopes to one day lead an entire division, with the ultimate goal of producing even more products which would benefit patient communities worldwide.

    Laura Robinson

Laura Robinson took her love of chemistry and math in high school and parlayed it into a successful career. Now working as a process safety & loss prevention engineer for Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Laura works with a team which focuses on safety for the Berkeley site, handling everything from the safety reviews of production facilities to ensuring the fire alarms work.

"Understanding chemistry and solving problems are good backgrounds for my current position. Every week I come across problems that I use my engineering knowledge to solve."

Laura arrived at the Bayer-Berkeley site after spending several years in environmental health and safety, and database management. She says her primary focus is to become a specialist in process safety and loss prevention at the Berkeley site, so that she and her colleagues can remain focused on achieving their production goals.

    Mike Jayasekera

Mike Jayasekera broke a family tradition when he decided in college to explore proteins and biotechnology, instead of becoming a medical doctor. He says he never regrets his decision. Today, Mike is Manager, Manufacturing Sciences Purification and Plasma at the Bayer-Berkeley site.

"The biomedical field gives you opportunities to change course in case you want a new challenge. If you join the pharmaceutical industry, as I did, you can do Research in different therapeutic areas, Quality Assurance, Production, Process Development, Regulatory Affairs, or be in management. The biomedical field offers new opportunities to change course in your life."

Since beginning his career in biotechnology, Mike has worked in different therapeutic areas, but always focused on protein purification. He is now working on purification of Kogenate. Each day brings new challenges, but Mike says he also appreciates the site's commitment to employee development and diversity. "What took me by surprise here at Bayer was how much they believe in their values, such as diversity. We have people from 42 countries here. When I said I was born in Sri Lanka, I was told I wasn’t the only one!"
